Voice of Jewish Sport: Sunday morning was full of shocks

Oakwood celebrate their 5-0 Cyril Anekstein Cup win over Hendon

‘SHOCK’ SEEMED to be the underlining buzzword from Sunday morning’s football. Be it Hendon’s cup shocker in their 5-0 loss to Oakwood, the latter’s manager saying they “shocked” Hendon with the manner of their performance”, or Scrabble finally losing a league game in shocking style. Hendon’s semi-final humbling was more about Oakwood’s splendour than their shoddiness, though the manner of their performance certainly left Hendon startled. Calling it their worst performance in years, the loss hurt manager David Garbacz all the more given how they got to this game – overcoming Redbridge in what’s now gone down as being the “best ever game of Jewish football”. All of that won’t though bother O’s joint-manager Daniel Kristall, who believed it was a result that had been a long time coming – even if the margin was slightly surprising. Scrabble’s defeat could perversely help them, as they now no longer have the added pressure of trying to win all their remaining games – as they try to win the Division Two title – trying to maintain a 100 percent-winning streak. Maccabi London Lions, who handed them a 6-1 drubbing can still mathematically win the title, though with Scrabble now needing just ten points from 15 to guarantee them top spot, while this defeat may give them food for thought, it shouldn’t prevent them from going on to achieve what they’ve threatened to do all season.

MANCHESTER CITY’S last foray with anything Israeli ended in unsuccessful spells for Nir Bitton and Gai Assulin. They have though now joined forces with Israeli web development company Wix.com, in what’s being seen as a bid to boost digital fan engagement across its various platforms. The Israeli company view the partnership as a way to boost their presence in sport after it spent £3.5m on a 30-second Super Bowl ad. And to celebrate their partnership, the two companies produced a video featuring Raheem Sterling, Pablo Zabaleta, Fernandinho and…Chris Kamara.
