Voters back Starmer over Corbyn ban, new poll shows

Voters support Keir Starmer’s decision to block Jeremy Corbyn standing as a Labour MP at the next election, a new poll has shown.

A survey conducted by polling firm Savanta for the Politics Home website showed just 23 per cent believed the Labour leader was wrong to stop Corbyn representing the party.

Meanwhile 55 per cent said Starmer had made the right move against the former leader, after confirming last week he could not stand for Labour in Islington North.

In the survey of 2,144 people, 22 per cent said they didn’t know what to make of the announcement by Starmer.

Asked if the move would affect how they voted, 28 per cent of people said it would.

Just 12 per cent said it would make them less likely to vote for Labour, and 16 per cent of people said it would make them more likely.

Corbyn, who had the Labour whip removed by Starmer over his response to the EHRC report in which he said antisemitism was “dramatically overstated for political reasons” will have to stand as an independent at the next election.

He has been MP in the north London seat for nearly four decades.
