Wayne David to step up as Labour’s shadow Middle East minister

Labour MP Wayne David has been asked to return to the shadow Middle East role to step in for Bambos Charalambous, who was suspended earlier this month over a complaint about his conduct.

David has previous experience in the front-bench role, when he was appointed as Keir Starmer’s first shadow minister for the Middle East and North Africa after he became leader in April 2020.

The MP for Caerphilly since 2001, David has been a shadow minister under every leader of the opposition since 2010, and has previously made clear his view that it is possible to champion both Israel and the Palestinian causes.

David had earlier announced that he planned to step down as an MP ahead of the next election, when he will turn 65.  

He said after reaching this decision:” “While some may disagree, I think at that age, I would not be able to represent my constituents as effectively as I would like. It is time to make way for a younger person.” 

Jewish News had previously reported how Charalambous, MP for Enfield Southgate, is under investigation by Labour after a complaint, which is not related to any claims of antisemitism, was made against him.

As a result of the complaint, which is being investigated under the independent complaints process, Charalambous is administratively suspended from the Labour.

Charalambous said: “I am aware that there is an allegation that requires investigation by the Labour party. It is right and proper that process is allowed to take place. I will cooperate fully and play my full part. It is not appropriate to say anything further at this time.”
