West London synagogue hosts interfaith seder

An interfaith Seder was hosted this week by former Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl on behalf of West London Synagogue, bringing together Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith leaders alongside senior civic and communal figures, for an evening of shared reflection and dialogue.

The event in Upper Berkeley Street was led by co-senior Rabbi Helen Freeman and welcomed a wide range of guests, including Ukrainian Catholic Bishop Kenneth Nowakowski, Haringey council leader Peray Ahmet and London’s deputy mayor for communities and social justice, Debbie Weeks-Bernard. Board of Deputies participants included chief executive Michael Wegier and the vice chair of the Board’s security, resilience and cohesion division, Judith Prinsley, Faith & Belief Forum chief executive Carrie Alderton also attended, as did philanthropists Rick Sopher and Edwin Shuker. Reverend Michael King, son of World War II veteran and Windrush Foundation founder Sam King, also attended, with his wife, Reverend Marjorie King.

Van der Zyl, who is also a trustee of the Faith & Belief Forum, said the evening highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and bringing communities together.

“At a time when communities can feel divided, it was deeply meaningful to bring together faith and civic leaders around the Seder table. Sharing the story of Pesach in this way reminds us of our common humanity and the importance of listening to one another.

“Bringing together both faith and civic leaders in this way helps to build trust and understanding. Creating opportunities for shared experience and open dialogue is essential in strengthening relationships and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.”
