What’s On: Something for the week!

We pick out the best things to see in London over the next seven days, including Simon Brodkin, Candi Gigi and Curtiz....

Curtiz

As the US prepares to enter the Second World War, Hungarian-born, Jewish director Michael Curtiz starts working on what would become his masterpiece, Casablanca. Going behind the scenes of one of the best films ever made, Curtiz, shot in black and white, is (almost) as captivating as the timeless classic it celebrates.  From 2 to 10 October, various times, at JW3, www.jw3.org.uk

Simon Brodkin

Jewish comedian Simon Brodkin performs alongside Allyson June Smith, Imran Yusuf, Luke Toulson and Ian Coppinger at Comedy Store. Brodkin is also known as serial prankster Lee Nelson, who has gatecrashed Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor – as well as Kanye West, Donald Trump and, most famously, Fifa’s Sepp Blatter. From 26 to 28 September, various times, at The Comedy Store, www.thecomedystore.co.uk

The Beauty of Jewish Ritual Art

Marvel at the beauty of the V&A’s Judaica collection and beyond in this tour taking visitors from the ancient roots of Judaism to contemporary Jewish design. Roam the Sacred Silver gallery, hear the legacy of the Jewish diaspora, Jewish ritual, festivals and routine practice. The story is brought into the 21st century with some fine contemporary pieces.  Thursday, 26 September, 1pm, at V&A Museum, www.vam.ac.uk

Friday Night Sinner! by Candy Gigi

A one-woman, horror-comedy musical about a Jewish, sexually-repressed, newly-married maniac. This narcissistic woman has delusions of grandeur and wants to become the biggest star in the universe – or at least Borehamwood – and spills her guts out to her guests over a highly unconventional Friday night dinner. Saturday, 28 September, from 7pm, at Jewish Museum, www.emergefestival.co.uk

Colour blind

Canadian-American-Israeli playwright Oren Safdie presents a reading of Color Blind, which satirises the racial politics of a jury selecting the winning design for the National Museum of African American Museum of History and Culture. The cast features Akie Kotabe, star of award-winning television drama, The Man in the High Castle.  Saturday, 28 September, 7.30pm, at Potemkin Theatre, www.potemkintheatre.com
