Wimbledon 2018 – Camila Giorgi happy, despite quarter-final exit

Camila Giorgi took plenty of positives from her Wimbledon campaign, even though it came to an end on Tuesday afternoon.

The Italian enjoyed an historic ten days at SW19, with her reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, though her run came to an end on centre court, when she was beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Serena Williams.

Reflecting back on the match, she told Jewish News: “I was very happy with my performance, I’ve been playing very well all week and played to a great level today too. I won the first set, and then she played well, but I’m happy with the way I played.”

Williams’ powerful shots and returns were a constant scourge to Giorgi, though just as noticeable was the fact the American only lost 14 points on her serve. Partly due to Giorgi’s aggressive style of play – which has in no small part got her to the last eight, she didn’t regret taking that style of play to Williams, saying: “No, it’s my game, that is why I’m playing well today, so no, I don’t regret anything.”

She definitely took the game to Williams, almost shocking centre court by winning the 35-minute first set. Winning the first break to go 4-2 up, she then held off three break points in her next service game, before serving out for the set in her next one.

Williams bounced back in the second, breaking in the fourth, from which point she never looked back, further holds of serves from both players seeing the American take it 6-3.

Williams took control of the third and final set in the the third game, claiming the third break of the match, and with the remaining games all going to serve, served out for a 3-6, 6-3 6-4 win.

However, able to look back fondly on the past ten days, Giorgi added: “Of course, I take a lot of positives from the tournament. I played some great matches, and these games will help me for the rest of the year. I think it’s been a great week or so for me here.”
