Camila Giorgi has reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, after she beat  Ekaterina Makarova on Monday afternoon.

The Italian, who was playing in a last-16 round at Wimbledon for the first time in six years, gave an assured performance, against a player, who’s ranked 17 places above her in the world.

The first half of the first set proved to be a cagey affair, with the first five games going with serve – Giorgi was forced to save break points – before she broke in the next game to go 4-2 up. Broken back herself in the next game, a third consecutive break of serve gave her the chance to serve out for the set – which she did.

Getting off to the best possible start in the second, breaking Makarova in the first game, the following games all went with serve, meaning Giorgi had the chance to serve out for the match – which she did, doing so on her fourth match point, a nervous game which also saw her forced to save a break point.

Happy with our she played, she said: “I think it was a great match, I was very consistent. I think all the points were very good, yes there were some mistakes, but I play my game and it was of a very good level.”

As to whether she was surprised it’s taken her as long as it has to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final, she said: “No, I always work to be here. In the last two years, there have maybe been some injuries, and other physical problems, I think this year I have more continuity, and that’s why I’m here [in the last eight].

Facing Serena Williams on centre court on Tuesday, as she looks to reach the last-four, she said: “I’m focussed on my game, and no one else. I’m playing good tennis, so I think just about my own game.”
