Wimbledon 2018 – Camila Giorgi through to second round

Jewish Italian wins opener on Monday afternoon, defeating Latvian Anastasija Sevastova

Camila Giorgi is through to the second round at Wimbledon

Camila Giorgi has enjoyed a winning start at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, as she beat the world number 21 Anastasija Sevastova.

The Italian looked like she was cruising into the next round, having taken the first set 6-1, but the Latvian, who is currently more than 20 places above her in the rankings, drew the match level, taking the second set 6-2.

The third and deciding set proved to be a much closer affair, though with Giorgi serving out for the match, did so at the second attempt, in a set which lasted 55 minutes. She will next take on either Serbian Aleksandra Krunic or American Madison Brengle.

Tuesday will see Israeli Dudi Sela take on Rafael Nadal, while the top-Jewish men’s player, Argentine Diego Schwartzman, takes on Bosnian Mirza Basic.
