Wimbledon 2018 – Diego Schwartzman suffers second round exit

Diego Schwartzman’s Wimbledon is over for another year after he fell to a disappointing straight-sets defeat against Jiri Vesely.

The number 11 seed was taking on a player ranked nearly 80 places below him, though the near foot difference in height was a decisive one, with the Czech serving numerous high-bouncing serves which the Argentine had no answer to.

The first set was level pegging, until Vesely claimed the first break in the sixth game to go 4-2 up, he then held his next two games to serve out for the set at 6-3.

The second set started off with three consecutive breaks – two in the Czech’s favour – and he then saved a break point to go 4-2 up. Both men then held as Vesely served out to double his advantage.

The third set was with serve at 2-1, before Schwartzman called a medical time out, the doctor coming on court after he complained of something in his eye, and the enforced play seemed to do the trick, as Schwartzman broke to go 4-2 up. Unable though to hold his next serve, the set went to 6-5, with Vesely serving to stay in it. Even more crucially, he saved three set points which would have seen Schwartzman right back in the match. Instead, it went to a tie-break, which Vesely comfortably won 7-3.

Jewish interest at SW19 now lies with Camila Giorgi, who is set to take on Czech Katerina Siniakova on Friday, while Israeli Jonathan Erlich, along with Poland’s Marcin Matkowski, take on Poland’s Lukasz Kubot and Brazilian Marcelo Melo in the men’s doubles.
