Wimbledon 2018 – Diego’s delight with first ever Wimbledon win

Diego Schwartzman was a happy man on Tuesday afternoon after he won his first ever match at Wimbledon.

The Jewish Argentine, who’s currently ranked 11 in the world and the 14th seed at SW19, turned in a comprehensive win, beating Bosnian Mirza Basic, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 in just 90 minutes.

Claiming his first win on the hallowed lawn – at the fourth time of asking – he told Jewish News: “I’m really happy with my first win here. It has maybe played a little bit on my mind [having not won at Wimbledon], but I wasn’t thinking about the past during the match. In my previous matches here, I’ve been close to the win, but maybe I didn’t have much luck. I lost against Nick Kyrgios, Grigor Dimitrov and then against Robin Hasse, 7-5 in the fifth. I’ve had many chances here on the grass, but nothing.”

Reflecting back on his performance, he said: “I was happy with it, but I know I can improve a lot – and I need to beat Jiri Vesely in the next round, I need to improve, to do better and I know I can do.”

Believing he knows what he has to do to book his place into the third round, he said: “All the players change their game for grass as it’s a bit different. Vesely has a really good serve, a really good backhand, but also he’s not the best in the movemement in the baseline, so I will need to try and put every ball to the side, try to move him, try to be aggressive and try to improve – and I know I can improve here.”

A fan of Wimbledon, even if today was only his first win here, he added: “The Grand Slams are kind of the same, but the big difference here is the club, the site, it’s big, it’s beautiful to be here. It’s not my best surface, I haven’t won a lot of matches here, but I enjoy playing here.”
