Wingate beaten at home by Hampton

The match was a game of two halves as the hosts dominated the opening 45, scoring twice, and though Wingate pressed in the second period, they could not find a way past the stubborn goalkeeper. Top scorer Charlie Moone tested Bobby Smith with an early volley that he easily held, but on 17 minutes he then scored a spectacular looping effort that left the stranded keeper with no chance – the goal reminiscent of Johan Cruyff’s most famous effort.
Stuart Lake doubled the lead for Hampton on the half hour mark as he rifled the ball home on the end of a half-cleared corner at the far post. This was a fully deserved lead for a side who had missed a host of chances already.
Adam Bolle hit the bar with Wingate’s best chance, as he tried to place a header from an Ola Williams cross but only found the woodwork.
The second half was much better as Wingate found some composure and improved their decision-making in tight areas. Spencer McCall tested keeper Rodney Chiweshe with a looping effort that he caught at full stretch. New signing Anton Olondo was brought on to add some creativity to the middle of the pitch and he sent a volley narrowly wide of the right post, as Wingate came close to forcing themselves back in the game.
Marc Weatherstone shot from close-range at the end of a deep free-kick but Chiweshe smothered the effort as he was not to be beaten.
With the score locked at 2-0 Hampton began to seek a third, and Karle Carder sent a snapshot narrowly wide, as did Dave Tarpey at the end of a quick breakaway. These chances sandwiched a Hector Morante one-on-one but he was denied by the imperious Chiweshe who secured his clean sheet in style.
Next up for Wingate is a crucial match against Thamesmead who leapfrogged them tonight with an unlikely 4-1 win over Maidstone.
