TABLE
FIXTURES & RESULTS

The conditions were awful with a strong seaside wind and a heavy pitch, and both sides struggled to break down organised defences. The game was settled by two moments of brilliance from Wingate’s attackers.

There was little of note through the first 45 minutes, but shortly before the break Wilfred Grimaud fired wide for the hosts in a poor first half. With the last attack of the half, Peacehaven’s Tom Burton headed a deep right wing cross goalwards but Bobby Smith was well-positioned to catch the effort.

Three minutes after the break Rob Laney broke the deadlock with a moment of magic. He received the ball on the edge of the box and sent an unstoppable left-footed volley arrowing into the top right corner of the net.

Tommy Tejan-Sie doubled the scoreline on the hour mark. Laney kept the ball in play with an intelligent back heel on the right side of goal, and Tejan-Sie tricked his way past two players inside the box before firing low across the keeper.

Chances were still at a premium due to the tricky conditions, with Marc Weatherstone and Ahmet Rifat solid in Wingate’s defence. At the other end Tejan-Sie freed David Knight, but his shot from a tight angle was easily blocked by keeper Anthony Di Bernardo.

Wingate looked to be closing out the game well, but in the final minute Jamie Brotherton sent over a deep cross from the left wing which flew straight into net, and this gave the visitors a fright for the final minutes. There was late a shot for Lloyd Cotton which was saved by Smith to secure the win for the visitors.
