Wingate started brightly through Dean Mason, who fired a vicious cross into the six-yard box. However, Bury grew into the game and gradually pegged Wingate back. They had an early goal disallowed for offside, and then the first clear chance came on 20 minutes as Adam Bailey-Dennis headed a free-kick which grazed the top of the bar.

Joe Whight sent a dangerous free-kick goalwards which was tipped over by Cain Davies, and as the pressure grew the opening goal seemed only a matter of time.

Three minutes before the break Bury scored, after Davies had again made a solid save to tip an effort from distance around the post. The corner was delivered deep and resulted in a scramble, which Ola Williams turned into his own net from the goalline.

Wingate were more settled in the second half which proved to be much more even. Danny Hart was brought on for his club debut, and sent four testing crosses into the box. Bury managed to scramble three of them away, but Leon Smith caught his foot onto one cross but could not direct it either side of the fortunate keeper Garnham.

The crucial second Bury goal arrived with 20 minutes remaining, shortly after Wingate’s best spell in the game. Shane Tolley was played through on the left and fired goalwards, but Davies parried the ball behind. The lead was then doubled as Clark’s corner from the left was flicked on and Tolley forced the ball home at the far post.

Spencer McCall had a low shot from the edge of the area but it was comfortably saved by Garnham low to his right, and Ahmet Rifat also had an effort on the turn but the ball deflected wide.
