The first half was tentative with both sides lacking flair, and the defences dominated. After 17 minutes Tommy Tejan-Sie had the first shot in anger, as he volleyed towards the near post from a wide angle out to the left, but Canvey keeper Josh Vickers got his body behind the ball.
Canvey’s best early chance came in the 20th minute from Jay Curran who skimmed a header narrowly wide of the far post from a corner.
Moments later Canvey’s keeper pulled off a miracle save to keep the scores level, as a Tejan-Sie cross found Lewis Jones at the far post whose header from point-blank range was blocked by Vickers. Vickers pulled off a better save on the half hour mark, as Ola Sogbanmu unleashed a powerful drive from distance. The ball arrowed towards the top left corner but an acrobatic leap enabled the keeper to tip the ball over.
However, it was Canvey who took the lead three minutes before the break in a goal which changed the match. A Sheldon Sellears free-kick from 40 yards out was whipped in to the box, and Jason Hallett rose unchallenged to flick the ball past the helpless Bobby Smith.
Hallett had the chance to double his side’s lead just a few minutes after break when he was released into a one-on-one. He was forced wide to the left by Smith and skied the resulting effort whilst off-balance from a tight angle. On the hour mark John Sands did double the lead for the visitors. Latching on to a through ball down the right side he outpaced Bobby Aisien to win the ball, and slotted low past Smith.
This second goal appeared to dishearten Wingate, whose heads dropped despite the confidence gained from a recent three-match winning run. The third goal followed in the 72nd minute, when a vicious Harrison Chatting low cross from the left wing evaded everyone and fell to Jay Curran at the far post for a simple tap in. Curran earned his brace four minutes later with a free header from a corner, as Wingate’s half fell apart.
Canvey continued attacking, and Sands sent a speculative effort on goal from the edge of the area, but Smith comfortably tipped the ball over the bar. The striker was then fed through as Wingate lost the ball on the edge of the area, but he pulled his shot across the face of goal.
Wingate’s night was summed up when a clearance fell into substitute Jack Read’s path and he had a clear run on goal. However his shot ballooned high and wide.
