Wingate end pre-season with win

Wingate & Finchley ended their pre-season campaign with a comfortable victory over Southern League side Chalfont St Peter.

Winger Karl Olayide opened the scoring on 15 minutes slotting home with his second attempt in quick succession, and Wingate never looked back as they dominated the first half. Scott Shulton fired a 20-yard free-kick goalwards and was denied as keeper Mike McCinnertag flicked it over the bar with his fingertips.

Chalfont came close to equalising but Wingate full-back Mark Goodman made a last-ditch block from Daniel Hughes at the near post, after a patient pass in to him from the right wing.

For all of Wingate’s dominance there was only a one goal lead, but they also edged the second half too. At the start of the second half Olayide crossed low but Rob Laney’s shot was aimed straight at the goalkeeper.

Tempers came close to flaring as the visitors’ Michael Lewis was forced to be substituted off by the referee after complaining for far too long at an innocuous challenge.

David Knight eventually doubled the lead for Wingate with 20 minutes remaining, after scoring a penalty that he had won having been needlessly hauled down by a defender.

Chaldon began to create their own chances following a few substitutions from both sides. Alan Hedley earned a run on goal after a long defence-splitting ball, but substitute goalkeeper Jack Metcalfe blocked the shot well with his legs.

Mark Goodman drilled an effort from the edge of the box, and as it was heading for the bottom left corner McCinnertag denied him with a strong right arm.

The final moment of the match came via a spectacular solo goal from new boy Eddie Adjei. Picking the ball up on the left touchline, he cut inside and drilled a perfect shot which arrowed into the bottom right corner of the net.
