The home side were quickest out of the blocks and Met Police struck first in only the sixth minute, as Tom Bird was released into the left side of the area and slotted past Cain Davies at the near post. Ten minutes later the lead was doubled as Charlie Collins converted a free header from close range after a hanging left-wing cross.

Wingate have been getting used to being punished by clinical finishing, and looked to hit back with patient play. In a fairly stale remainder of the first half, Dean Smith had a shot which looped into the keeper’s arms, and Ahmet Rifat curled a free kick narrowly wide of the top left corner.

Wingate were a different side after the break, in particular as the introduction of Craig Davies forced a formation tweak. Adam Bolle embarked on an inspiring run cutting inside from the left wing. He played the ball up to Davies but his low drive was tipped wide by the fingertips of keeper Stuart Searle.

From the resulting corner a Met Police defender committed a clear handball above his head, but the referee failed to spot the infringement. Davies was put through again a few minutes later, this time through the middle, but his one-on-one was stopped by the resilient keeper’s foot.

However, despite Wingate’s excellent pressure, Met Police broke up the other end and spread the play with a searching all out to the right wing – Nigel Neita scored from here with a low drive in off the post to seal the win.

Next up for Wingate is a trip to Bognor Regis on Saturday, looking to defend the three point lead above East Thurrock Utd.
