In the fifth minute the Blues took the lead with their first chance of the match. Ola Sogbanmu fed through Rob Laney who burst into the left side of the area, and he clinically clipped the ball past the keeper from close range.
The critical moment came six minutes later. Laney was fed through again and was senselessly fouled as he reached the area. The red card duly followed for the stupid defender who should have let him go, and David Knight was ruthless from the spot.
The floodgates were open and it could have been three soon afterwards. Laney crossed deep to his partner Knight. His acrobatic volley was parried by an equally acrobatic diving save from Alex Archer.
Marc Weatherstone and Sogbanmu both fired off target, as Wingate’s midfield dominance ensures they controlled the first half. With the one man advantage, Stuart Lake was calm in space in a holding role, with Sogbanmu, Tommy Tejan-Sie and Richard Graham all fluid in front of him.
However, the second half was a different story, as Bury had renewed confidence with Wingate not having extended the lead. Ten minutes after the break Bury pulled a goal back. Joe Benjamin closed down Bobby Smith after a short back pass and slotted home the rebound.
Knight forced a save from Archer with a low shot on the turn through a crowd in a rare chance for Wingate, but it was the Bury striker who threatened the most. Benjamin latched on to a through ball and lobbed a header past a stranded Smith, but somehow the ball bounced wide of the right post.
Late on Ola Sogbanmu was forced off through injury and was replaced by Gavin Suddell, whilst Benjamin had another chance with a low shot from a tight angle which Smith anticipated and blocked.
However, as the clock ticked down Wingate dominated the closing stages. Knight fed in Laney whose low shot was brilliantly blocked by Archer with his foot. Substitute Suddell fired narrowly over from distance with a firm drive, and shortly afterwards the final whistle blew.
