Despite the final scoreline, the first half was a very even affair, and at 2-0 at the interval, the lead greatly flattered the hosts. Tommy Tejan-Sie and Craig Davies linked up early on after a defender misjudged a bounce – Davies worked a half-chance from the edge of the area but pulled his shot narrowly wide of the right post.
Wingate were pressing forwards, but despite the bright start Lowestoft took the lead amid controversy. A cross came in, and after a heavy foul and two head injuries, play was allowed to continue and Michael Frew had a free volley which he scored with as a stricken Rifat played him onside.
Wingate hit the post as Ola Sogbanmu flicked a header from a Tejan-Sie free-kick, but they were made to pay immediately as Jack Ainsley scored a header from a deep left-wing cross in a momentary lapse at the back.
Adam Smith scored a free-kick five minutes after the break to seal the points, though worse was to follow. Just a few minutes later the referee gave a debatable penalty when Josh Kennet was adjudged to have tripped his marker, which Ainsley tucked away for the fourth.
Two goals followed on the hour mark after Lowestoft carved open a shell-shocked Wingate. Jack Reed ran through to slot home after the ball was given away in midfield, before Ainsley secured his hat-trick moments later with a simple goal.
Connor Doddington finished things off tapping home a simple cross in the final minute. Wingate will look to forget this night quickly and focus on two vital home games, on Saturday and Tuesday, as they look to bounce back and cement the gap beneath them.
