Yahya ranked in top 100 names for boys in UK, says Office for National Statistics
583 babies share name of October 7 mastermind Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in October 2024
A new report by the Office of National Statistics reveals that Yahya ranked 93rd in the top 100 most popular baby names in England and Wales in 2024, 33 places higher than the previous year.
ONS, which compiles the list using birth registration data, shared that 583 boys born last year now share the same name as terror chief, Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the October 7 2023 atrocities.
During “Black Shabbat”, thousands of Hamas-led terrorists murdered 1,200 people and took 251 hostage, leading to the ongoing war in Gaza.
Sinwar, also known as the “butcher of Khan Younis” was killed during an October 2024 IDF operation in Rafah, just over two months after he ascended to Hamas’ top position.
The 62-year-old, also known as Abu Ibrahim and originally from the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, helped build Hamas’s military wing, the Qassam Brigades, from its inception in the 1980s. He then spent nearly two decades in Israeli prison but was released in 2011 as part of a swap deal for seized Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
According to the Office of National Statistics list, Muhammad retained its place as the most popular boys’ name, while Olivia kept its place as the most popular girls name for a third year in a row
