William and Kate, the Prince and Princess of Wales, have issued a heartfelt tribute to Zigi Shipper following his death this week on his 93rd birthday.

Zigi and fellow survivor Manfred Goldberg accompanied the royal couple on their visit to Stutthof concentration camp, Poland in 2017.

They were reunited with Kate online in January 2021 for Holocaust Memorial Day, when Zigi told her he had “two daughters, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. What a life!”.

Writing this week on their public Twitter account, the royal couple shared a personal black and white photograph of themselves with Zigi and said: “In 2017, we had the honour to meet Holocaust survivor, Zigi Shipper on our visit to Stutthof. We were sad to learn earlier today of his passing. He will be truly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. W&C.”

Tributes to Zigi have been flooding in from within and beyond the Jewish community since his death on Tuesday.
