14 children from Muswell Hill Shul visit schools in Kiev
They took part in various workshops, including challah making, Israeli-dance, mask-making and robotics
Some 14 children from Muswell Hill Synagogue have travelled with their families to visit schools in Kiev and take part in a Shoah memorial service at Babi Yar.
They met with students they each had been paired with, dubbed their “twin”, from the Kiev ORT Educational Complex no.141 and The Jewish State Educational Complex.
Children took part in various workshops, including challah making, Israeli-dance, mask-making and robotics.
It was organised by the charity ORT UK as part of their bar and bat mitzvah twinning programme, which has been running for three years.
The year-long programme features mandatory sessions on Jewish culture, history and identity and a social action and fundraising project.
“It was really cool to meet my twin as we have only communicated through WhatsApp, so it was good to meet face to face, said Aron Taylor, who visited his twin in Kiev.
“We were from different countries but that didn’t matter, because I realised we were both 12 year olds, connected by our Judaism.”
Julia Kozyr, a parent from Kiev, said: “I’m deeply grateful for this wonderful opportunity to meet the twins’ families from London.
“It was a pleasure to meet everyone, to get to know each other better and to discuss our kids’ life, just to realise that we have so much in common.”
