Holocaust Survivors group donates over £10k to help Ukrainians in need

An organisation representing a group of Holocaust survivors and their families has made a substantial donation to help Ukrainians in desperate need of help following Russia’s devastating assault on the country.

The ’45 Aid Society, founded by Sir Ben Helfgott, said it had donated £10,732  to World Jewish Relief’s (WJR) Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

WJR, then know as the Central British Fund, was instrumental in bringing over the group of survivors, known as “The Boys”. The 732 is symbolic as it represents the number of Boys that WJR helped to bring to the UK after liberation.

“The Boys continue to be grateful to WJR for helping them to heal and start new lives and now feel it is their time to give financial support to help WJR in their vital work in the Ukraine,” the ’45 Aid Society said in a statement.

Angela Cohen, Chairman of the ’45 Aid Society, said: “When WJR helped bring our Boys to start new lives in 1945, they really did help them to heal and recover from the horrors of the Holocaust.

“So now, with war raging in the Ukraine, we want to give back to and support WJR. We have given a donation to their Ukraine Crisis Appeal, as our Boys remember only too well what it felt like being a refugee, losing members of your family and having to flee because of war with nowhere to go.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine and we pray that this terrible war will come to an end very soon.”
