’70 days for 70 years’: Global reading project for Shoah memory

Jews around the world have been encouraged to read a Jewish-themed essay every day for 70 days in memory of a victim of the Holocaust. 

Participants in the programme, which originated in the UK, will use a book containing 70 thought-provoking questions, ideas, stories and articles by world-renowned authors and scholars.

The ’70 Days for 70 Years’ project, launched in Israel on Sunday, includes a learning memorial card for each day.

The card carries the details of one victim of the Holocaust, in whose memory participants will learn.

“Learning in the names, memories and personalities of people is the best and most holy way of remembering them,” said Israeli Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau, who recalled his time in the Buchenwald concentration camp as a child.

 Rav Doron Perez of World Mizrachi, which partnered the United Synagogue on the project, said it “merged the memory of the past with a vision for the future and connecting us all through the power of Torah learning”.
