8 shoes stolen from Majdanek museum

Eight shoes belonging to former inmates of the Nazi death camp at Majdanek have been stolen from the camp’s museum.

An employee noticed the shoes were missing on Saturday following a routine check.

Museum spokeswoman Agnieszka Kowalczyk-Nowak described how a hole was cut in the metal mesh of a display containing several hundred shoes. “After counting the shoes, we found eight missing,” she said.

The theft comes four years after the infamous Arbeit Macht Frei sign at the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz was stolen but subsequently recovered.

Majdanek concentration camp is located near Lublin southeastern Poland.

360,000 people, over half of them Jews, were murdered in the camp.
