Alex Winehouse – “real cause of Amy’s death was bulimia”

Amy Winehouse’s brother has said that the real cause of the 27-year old singer’s death was bulimia.

In an interview with the Observer, Alex Winehouse said the eating disorder had left her “weaker and more susceptible” to the effects of drugs and alcohol.

He said: “She would have died eventually, the way she was going, but what really killed her was bulimia – had she not had an eating disorder, she would have been physically stronger.”

Together with the star’s father Mitch, Alex is co-founder of the Amy Winehouse Foundation – a charity that works with those suffering the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

The singer won international acclaim in her relatively short career, culminating in five Grammy’s for her album ‘Back to Black.’ However, she eventually lost her well-publicised battle with addiction and was found dead at her flat in Camden on 23 July 2011.

Most recently, her brother Alex has co-curated a new Jewish Museum exhibition about his sister, called ‘Amy Winehouse: A Family Portrait.’
