Bagels at dawn as drunk commuters duel with dough

Police called to late-night train after fighting erupts over spherical snack in incident dubbed #Bagelgate

Officers from British Transport Police were called to the rowdy carriage after girls with a large supply of bagels began putting them on their heads.

The humble bagel caused havoc aboard a Peterborough-bound train from London this week, as Jews’ favourite foodstuff proved fodder for fighting commuters.

Officers from British Transport Police were called to the rowdy carriage after girls with a large supply of bagels began putting them on their heads, then the heads of fellow passengers, with some more amused than others.

“It was pretty funny but then people started getting a bit worked up and all of a sudden these two girls are going at one another,” said one commuter, of the Saturday night train.

Officers from British Transport Police were called to the rowdy carriage after girls with a large supply of bagels began putting them on their heads.

“It’s hard to know how it started. One of them was saying the other one looked at her funny. They had to get a few bodies in between to keep them apart. The bagel thing was still going on at the same time and this fellow started chucking them out the window. I don’t think he thought it was funny anymore.”

A BTP spokeswoman said: “We were called at 1.15am on Sunday to reports of a disturbance on a board a train. We attended and spoke to passengers but no allegations of any offences were made. If anyone wants to come forward to make any complaints then we will investigate further.”

Jewish community representatives were reassured that the incident – dubbed #Bagelgate – was not a hate crime, adding that the song “he’s got a ba-gel on his head” is actually quite catchy.
