Board of Deputies recognises ‘global climate crisis’
The Board of Deputies has backed a motion declaring a climate crisis, committing it to helping secure net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
The Board of Deputies has backed a motion which declares a global climate crisis, pledging to take action to cut carbon emissions.
The motion commits the board to play its part to “achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
It also encourages education initiatives to spread awareness of the climate emergency.
“This meeting therefore calls on the Board to take appropriate action – alongside EcoSynagogue and other partners – to ensure they achieve net zero carbon emissions by the target date,” states the motion.
It is said to be among the first times a UK communal organisation has declared a climate crisis.
The Board’s leadership election concludes this week, with the result being declared on Tuesday morning.
Incumbent Marie van der Zyl is facing a challenge from Jonathan Neumann, a charity lawyer. It is the first time a sitting president has been challenged for the role since 1964.
