Boris Johnson and new Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will speak for the first time on the telephone in the next few weeks, Downing Street has confirmed.

The UK prime minister had tweeted his “congratulations” to both Bennett and Yair Lapid on forming a new government in Israel on 13 June, ending more than a decade of rule by Benjamin Netanyahu. But until now there had been no telephone conversation.

Downing Street said both the Israel and UK prime ministers had been working to make time in their busy schedules to speak to one another about shared interests. There are currently no plans for the leaders to meet in person.

United States President Joe Biden is among those to have already spoken with the Israeli prime minister on the phone.
