Brexit Party’s MEP Lance Forman backs Trump stance on settlements

Right-wing businessman-turned-politician says he did not believe West Bank settlements are 'illegal', echoing the US president's comments this month

A Jewish Member of the European Parliament has argued that Jewish settlements in the West Bank are not “illegal” under international law.

Lance Forman of the Brexit Party told the European Parliament that he sided with Donald Trump on settlements.

“It is a lie that Israeli settlements are illegal,” he said. “The European Union should be ashamed of itself for perpetuating the myth that settlements are illegal under international law when that ruling lacks legal evidence.”

Forman, who runs a smoked salmon business in London, used his speech on Wednesday to label as “racist” an EU law passed earlier this month requiring settlement products to be labelled as such.

He said the law “forced Jewish-owned businesses in the West Bank to label their goods differently to non-Jews” and “reminds us of an earlier period in European history,” in reference to the lead-up to the Holocaust.
