The Chief Rabbi, Sir Eric Pickles and a host of other politicians have backed the campaign as part of efforts to ensure the memory of the Holocaust hero’s actions and the lessons they offer last for future generations.

Sir Nicholas, who passed away last month, arranged for 669 unaccompanied children to flee Czechoslovakia for the safety of the UK and later organised foster families for many of the youngsters. The petition was this week trending on campaigning website change.org.

The initiative has been backed by the Holocaust Educational Trust, the Association of Jewish Refugees and Sir Mick Davis, who chaired David Cameron’s Holocaust Commission.

News editor Justin Cohen, said: “Support for this petition has been overwhelming, but it is hardly surprising when we’re talking about a man like Sir Nicholas, whose story remains as a lesson that one person can truly make a difference.”

The Czech stamp will be issued next month.
