CATFORD & BROMLEY 3 STRAW HAT PIRATES 2
Goals from Alex Jacobs, Mitch Green and Jamie Sinai saw Jeff Gotch’s Catford side get off to a winning start.

Catford player-manager Jeff Gotch told jewishnews.co.uk: “We didn’t start playing until half ten and at that point we were 2-0 down to a strong looking Pirates side.

“I changed things at half-time, going to a back three and front four, and from there on, we completely dominated. We pulled one back through Alex Jacobs’ half-volley from edge of box, and then wasted several glorious chances over the next 30 minutes.

“Mitch drew us level with a bullet of a header from Danny Yeshua’s corner, and with five minutes of stoppage time, we knew we would get one chance. That came Mitch flicked on a long throw which was saved by Pirates defender, the referee pointed to the spot and Jamie, cooly tucked it away with the last kick of the game.

“We managed to get three points when only five minutes earlier, we looked like we wouldn’t get any.”

Ethan Mooney and Aron Gale gave The Pirates a 2-0 lead, for whom manager Elliot Cukier told jewishnews.co.uk: “It’s a great shame to lose like that in the last five minutes, so close to the end. We played some outstanding football in the first half, despite losing our captain after five minutes.
“We had a great showing today against an established side in the league, and proved that we can make serious waves in this league and are here to stay’.”

FAIRLOP FC 2 HERTSWOOD VALE 1
New boys Fairlop began life in Jewish football with an opening day win.

Daniel Rosen’s strike, plus an own goal saw them to the win, with Ollie Brill replying for the visitors.

Manager Aaron Dias told jewishnews.co.uk: “Not the best performance, but we are happy with the result. Once step closer to our goal, which is winning the league whilst going unbeaten. Special mention to Gayer & Berkley who were outstanding.”

Vale’s Jacob Emanuel told jewishnews.co.uk: “Fairlop look a very solid side indeed with lots of technical footballers, but I’m unsure if they’re the hardest team we’ll face in the league this season.

“We hold our heads up high off the back of a solid display and look forward to inviting Real Hendon to the Fortress next weekend. In the meantime, we find ourselves disappointed heading back to North London.”
