Community celebrates Purim with fancy dress extravaganza
Thousands of people take part in festivities, dressed as Mordechais and Minions, Esthers and Oompa-Loompas
There were superheroes in Edgware, oompa-loompas in Mill Hill, fairies in Golders Green and ninjas in Stamford Hill, as hundreds of London Jews celebrated Purim on the weekend.
Holding a specially-made ‘Jewish News Purim fancy dress extravaganza!’ banner, young revelers posed for Purim pictures in Mill Hill and Edgware, dressed in colourful costumes.
At Mill Hill United Synagogue, assistant rabbi James Proops led more than 250 people, including many children in a pantomime performing the Purim story, with the shul’s youngest members also taking part in a drumming session.
Rabbi James Proops, Assistant Rabbi Mill Hill United Synagogue told Jewish News: “This Purim we held our first ever Purim Panto which was a massive success and an amazing time was had by all. This was followed by our annual NW7 Kids Purim Party which is always hugely popular. Both events had over 250 people and it was amazing to see such a vibrant young part of the community coming together to celebrate Purim”
Teenagers also took part in a ‘Mega Jump’ event at a trampoline park and a boat party on the river, with United Synagogue youth organisation Tribe.
In Edgware, Purim partygoers could be seen on the street, dressed as pirates and Japanese kimono outfits.
Outside Grodzinski bakery and Mendy’s deli in Edgware, young volunteers dressed as playing cards and skeletons collected money for Jewish charities Camp Simcha and Kisharon.
In Stamford Hill, the Charedi Jewish community held a Purim parade, with music and dancing in the street.
