Some 70 participants from 13 countries met in London for the opening of the Global Israeli Leadership Summit. Initiated by Israeli representatives from four different communities around the world, including Anat Koren, publisher and editor-in-chief of the London-based Alondon magazine, the summit was opened by Israeli MP Avraham Wortzman, deputy to the Minister of Education.
News in Brief:
• LGBT seder night
The Jewish Gay and Lesbian Group held its annual second night seder as 55 LGBT Jews and their partners, along with parents, enjoyed a four-course meal in north London.
• Shared sanctuary
Approximately 100 members and friends gathered in the Sanctuary at Woodford Liberal Synagogue’s traditional communal second seder night. Led by Rabbi Richard Jacobi, this year saw an orange and an extra serving of maror added to the seder plate, to acknowledge the role women play in Jewish life, and to remember all the people who are still enslaved in this world. Synagogue chairman Bob Kamall said: “It was a fun night and nice to see so many with three generations joining together to celebrate our freedom.”
• Combined revelry
Children from Mosaic Jewish Primary School in Wandsworth celebrated their first Passover seder, while also taking part in Easter celebrations. Fifty percent of the pupils are Jewish, with the others being from other faiths and beliefs. Headteacher Kate Baum said: “Passover and Easter are very special times for many of our pupils and their families and we have taken this opportunity to truly embrace our ethos of cross communal understanding and celebration.”
• Norwood business breakfast
Norwood’s Business & Entrepreneurs Breakfast Network raised more than £68,000 for the charity. Vince Cable MP attend the event as their guest of honour.
