Corbyn’s HMD message urges understanding of ‘the way fascism arose’

Jeremy Corbyn has said we should “understand the way fascism arose in Germany” in his written message in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s memorial Book of Commitment in Parliament.

The Labour leader said it was important to understand “the circumstances that gave space for the Nazis to grow,” in comments interpreted as a reflection of the increasing prevalence on nationalism around the world.

“We should never forget the Holocaust: The millions who died, the millions displaced and cruel hurt their descendants have suffered,” he wrote.

“We should understand the way fascism arose in Germany and the circumstances that gave space for the Nazis to grow. At this, and at all other times, we should reflect and make sure succeeding generations understand the power of words.”

He said words had “power to do immense good and inspire” as well as the “power to promote hate and division,” adding: “Let us use their power to educate to inspire but above all to build values of trust and respect.”

Dozens of politicians from Westminster, the Scottish Parliament and the London Assembly have signed the HET’s Book of Commitment, including Communities Minister Sajid Javid and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.
