The chief executive of CST is encouraging the Jewish community to carry on with life as normal.

In an update email seen by Jewish News, Mark Gardner says that since the Hamas terror attacks of October 7th, the organisation tasked with protecting the Jewish community in the UK has seen an unprecedented 700% growth in anti-Jewish hate incidents in the UK. That’s more in this period than in the previous six months.

CST says those incidents have mainly involved verbal abuse and threats, graffiti or online hate.

Gardener adds: “Thankfully most have not involved any violence, although of course we are keenly aware that this may change. I encourage you and your families to proudly carry on your Jewish life as before. This is why we have the security measures that you and others have helped CST to develop over many years.”

In reassuring the community, CST says it has worked “constantly’ with the police and government since the war began just over three weeks ago.

Their main concern is, “should the situation worsen – the clear risk of antisemitic violence and terrorism.”

Gardener adds that CST “have strongly advocated on our community’s behalf on matters ranging from the safety of our children and students, to the policing of anti-Israel hate demonstrations. This has been done in a series of meetings with government at the most senior levels.”

CST’s advice remains as follows:

In whatever way you are involved with the community, be vigilant and follow security procedures.

If you see something suspicious or are the victim of antisemitism, report it immediately to CST.

Take care not to spread rumours and false news. These cause unnecessary alarm and distraction.
