Edgware and Hendon reform shuls confirm merger talks

Two of the Reform movement’s most prominent communities are in discussions about a potential merger, Jewish News can reveal.
Edgware and District Reform Synagogue and Hendon Reform Synagogue have confirmed that talks on the feasibility of such a move began last summer, as large numbers of community members move northwards.
The discussions come as Stephen Garfinkel, Chairman of EDRS, said “the demographics of the Reform Jewish community in north west London has shifted, as have the congregational needs of being a synagogue member”.
Philip Bright, Chairman of HRS, added: “With the rise in the number of Jewish schools and the changing day to day requirements of our communities, we need to consider the long term effect this will have on our synagogues and membership.”
Trustees from both communities have set up a working party to explore the potential viability and ramifications. Members have been informed of the initial discussions.
Jewish news revealed last year that Elstree and Borehamwood had overtaken Stanmore as the largest United Synagogue community.
