Exhibit recalls Brady Club retreat at Skeet House
Mementos from the seven-acre site in rural Chelsfield, which was once host to youth club activities, will go on show in early September
A kosher retreat in the Kent countryside is to host a new photo exhibition charting the life and times of the Brady Club, which once shaped Jewish life in the East End of London.
Skeet Hill House, a seven-acre retreat in rural Chelsfield, was where the Brady Club once met and ran its activities, and this month those memories go on show after past members came together to pool photos for the gallery launch next month.
The club was founded in 1896 by philanthropists including Charlotte de Rothschild, and in its heyday it counted thousands of members, including the famous Jewish signer Georgia Brown, but changing demographics led it to cease operations in the 1970s.
“I joined when I was 14,” said Michael Yershon, 76, who helped organise the new permanent exhibit. “I still feel passionately about the Brady Club, as do all of my peers. It immensely helped to shape the local Jewish community.”
The gallery launch will take place with a tea party from 2-5pm on 15 September. Tickets are £10.
