Our mission

BNJC (Brighton & Hove Jewish Community), based at 29-31 New Church Road, Hove will comprise residential, educational, cultural, religious, social and co-working facilities. By building a brand-new synagogue, outstanding kosher dining options and programming cultural events and classes, we aim to support Jewish life in Brighton, across the spectrum. We aim to put the outstanding seaside city of Brighton & Hove back on the Jewish map and attract the Jewish community from all backgrounds to call Brighton & Hove their home.

BNJC Team Overview

We aim to employ 8-10 people at BNJC. The food and nursery side of our operation will be out-sourced and we will have strong support on the Co-Working offering from Work Avenue in London. The team will comprise programming & events, finance, co-working, marketing, site management (supported by an outsourced Managing Agent).

About the role:

There are multiple Strategic Business Units (SBUs) that we will run once the site opens:

  1. Food & Beveridge Offering, which consists of:
    • a. Parev & Meat Restaurant
    • b. Kosher Shop
    • c. Event catering
    • d. Small Dairy café
    • e. Bakery
  2. Co-Working Offer
  3. Nursery School
  4. Programming, Education & Events Business
  5. Gym
  6. Residential
    • a. Rental Properties
    • b. Service Charge oversight (Site Management Company appointed)
  7. On-site there will also be Brighton & Hove Hebrew Congregation (BHHC), which will operate a Synagogue and Mikvah (Religious ritual bath). They have their own financial support, and there will be opportunities to collaborate with that team.

Responsibilities include technical & business accounting:

• Cash and liquidity management
• Accounting records for BNJC and other entities that we oversee
• Leading the annual audit on BNJC’s behalf
• Budgeting process with SBUs and preparing budget for overall entity
• Strategic advice to SBUs
• Monthly budgeting variance analysis
• Tax planning
• Preparing VAT returns
• Risk Management – assist CEO in creating and update Risk Register
• In time overseeing an accounts’ assistant
• In the early days, monitoring and recording payments and receipts on all accounts
• Preparing payments and inter-account transfers – the Catering and Nursery are to be run by separate companies. BNJC will oversee the banking / accounting for these.
• Resolving day to day queries on payments and membership accounts for customers
• Preparing monthly bank reconciliations across number of bank accounts
• Reconciling balance sheet nominal ledger accounts
• Assisting with preparation of monthly & quarterly management reporting
• Supporting in ad hoc projects
• General filing & organising

Experience, qualifications & skills

• ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualification
• At least 2 years’ experience working within a finance department, ideally with experience leading in budgeting process, tax planning, audit process
• The ability to produce highly accurate work and a good attention to detail
• High level of numeracy
• Good communication and organisational skills
• The ability to work to a deadline
• Strong Microsoft and Excel skills

Remuneration / Contract Terms

• Salary range £35,000 – £45,000 depending on experience
• Permanent Role
• 40 hour working week
