Renowned sculptor Frances Segelman created a bust of friend and Kinderstransport refugee Kurt Marx for Holocaust Memorial Day.

The event took place on Sunday 28th January at Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue (EHRS) in north London.

Shul member Segelman has sculpted Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip and King Charles. Marx, at the age of 98 years, is often called upon to give his testimony as a survivor of the Shoah. He came to the UK on the Kindertransport from his birthplace in Cologne in 1939.

Segelman said: “It is a wonderful experience to be able to sculpt such a wonderful man as Kurt at my synagogue with so many friends and family watching”.

Marx said: “It is amazing that Frances took a piece of clay which ended up looking like me after two hours!”

In June 2023, Segelman created a bust of Holocaust survivor Eve Kugler in front of a live audience at Kinloss synagogue. In partnership with the Yad Vashem UK Foundation, she has also sculpted busts of Shoah survivors including Manfred Goldberg BEM, the late Zigi Shipper BEM z’l, Marianne Philipps, the late Sir Ben Helfgott and Mala Tribich MBE.
