Almost half a million pounds has been raised by World Jewish Relief to support the global recovery from the pandemic.

The charity raised £470,000 in 36 hours which will go towards its partners across 18 countries around the world.

With restrictions lifted in the UK and vaccine roll-out continuing, the fundraising bid recognised that many are still struggling globally.

Donations came from 1,300 people, and the total was matched by a group of generous funders.

The funds will go towards everything from PPE to hygiene equipment, including in countries such as Bangladesh, which has already been hit by natural disasters or forced displacement of people. The charity also supports Jewish communities in Eastern Europe, where 60% of the people it helps are struggling with access to healthcare.

So far, World Jewish Relief has reached 29,530 people in 13 countries to help their covid recoveries.

World Jewish Relief’s Chief Executive Paul Anticoni says: “I am astounded at the response and generosity of so many supporters to our Global Recovery Campaign. When there is such pressure on our services from those within and beyond the Jewish community, from Ukraine to Uganda and Belarus to Bangladesh, this support will enable us and our partners to scale up our response. It has helped us replace event income which couldn’t take place and I cannot thank our Team Leaders and supporters enough.”

World Jewish Relief focuses its support in a number of areas, including awareness raising and distribution of essential hygiene and food packages, providing PPE for older people and their carers in Eastern Europe, and supplying laptops to enable people to continue working.
