The chief executive of a Jewish domestic abuse charity features on a list of the 100 most inspiring women from around the world.

Naomi Dickson, of Jewish Women’s Aid (JWA), was named on the BBC’s 100 Women of 2020, which was unveiled on Tuesday.

Others on the prestigious list include Sanna Marin, who leads Finland’s all-female coalition government, as well as actress and climate activist Jane Fonda, scientist Sarah Gilbert, who has headed up Oxford University’s research into a coronavirus vaccine and actress Michelle Yeoh, star of the new Avatar and Marvel films.

After hearing the news, Dickson said: “I am incredibly honoured to be named on the BBC 100 Women 2020 list along with an amazing group of women whose achievements are incredible.

“It’s a huge privilege for me to work alongside colleagues who are committed to ending domestic abuse in the Jewish community and beyond, and to preventing it from happening through education and training.

“This accolade is one which I wouldn’t have achieved without their dedication and hard work.”

Last week, JWA revealed that it had helped more than 500 domestic abuse victims since the beginning of the pandemic, while support for children rose by nearly a third, as it launched its new campaign, #AMaskWontProtectHer.

For the first time in its 25-year history, the charity has also set up an emergency welfare grant fund and has distributed almost £20,000 in grants for food, nappies, electricity and other household needs.

On Thursday, the charity will host London Unmasked, a free online event featuring broadcaster and journalist Emma Barnett in conversation with bestselling author Noreena Hertz and Designate Domestic Abuse Commissioner Nicole Jacobs, as they discuss the impact of the pandemic on women experiencing domestic abuse.
