Head of London School of Jewish Studies joins international solidarity trip to Israel
Chief executive Joanne Greenaway was part of 32-strong global delegation of leaders focused on furthering partnerships between the Jewish state and diaspora post -7 October
The London School of Jewish Studies’ chief executive joined a global delegation of education leaders on a four-day solidarity mission to Israel.
Joanne Greenaway accompanied 32 participants including leaders of federations, academic institutions and umbrella education bodies from 12 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, South Africa, Australia and the USA.
The aim of the trip was to experience and reflect on the war, consider emerging issues in Israel’s education, Jewish identity and peoplehood, and to examine proactive strategies to address these issues in schools and other educational settings.
Greenaway said: “The trip gave us the chance to meet some remarkable people who shared their stories with us. What was surprising was their resilience and determination to rebuild, despite all their suffering; it was really inspiring. I came home with a renewed sense of mission and of the critical importance of what we are doing to deepen Jewish engagement.”
Noting that everyone has come to realise that both those in Israel and the diaspora are all affected and that the way forward is through partnership and constant communication, she added: “October 7 was a low point in our story but it does not define us. We are part of an extraordinary people and together we will build a stronger future. In order to do so, education is the greatest key to our security, but we must choose how we tell our story”, said Joanne.
LSJS are offering people the chance to join a three-day trip to Israel, from the 12th to 14th March, to meet educators, activists, soldiers and people affected by the atrocities of 7 October.
As well as volunteering and showing support by visiting Israel, participants will meet expert educators for an in-depth understanding of the impact of 7 October and the war, and its significance on our future. The trip will also provide an understanding of the changes happening in Israeli society and an opportunity to bear witness to the sites of Hamas’ atrocities.
