Hendon United Synagogue has appointed a new associate rabbinic couple to serve the shul from September on Shabbat, Chagim and one other day a week.

Rabbi Zvi Portnoy and rebbetzen Orly previously served Loughton Federation Synagogue for six years.

A trainee psychotherapist at Tavistock NHS Trust, rabbi Portnoy holds a bachelor in psychology and counselling and a master’s degree in Jewish education.

Meanwhile the rebbetzen, who studied maths at Manchester University, teaches the subject at Hasmonean Boys’ School and tutors privately.

The pair say they are “delighted to be embarking on this new journey with Hendon United Synagogue”, praising its “wonderful community recognised across Anglo-Jewry for its warmth and inclusivity as well as excellent religious, educational and social events.”

Senior rabbi Ginsbury described the couple as “really high calibre, warm, intelligent, dynamic, caring and learned”, adding: “My wife and I very much look forward to working with them.”
