House call: hosts wanted for young Ukrainian families
Harrow residents are being asked to open their doors this winter to families fleeing Ukraine
A social enterprise founded by members of two north London synagogues is appealing to Harrow residents to host Ukrainian families with babies under six months old.
Two Generations is looking for hosts in the borough with a spare room, facilities to share and the ability to commit to a minimum of six months.
Co-founded by Sam Brandman and Natasha Langleben of New North London and Alyth synagogues, Two Generations has been working closely with Harrow council on its ‘Homes for Ukraine’ scheme to assess all potential host families, offer host peer support groups and support with rematching when a match comes to an end.
Since April, Two Generations has assessed hundreds of host families who have welcomed Ukrainians into their homes. ‘Homes for Ukraine’ offers £350 per month thank-you payments to hosts, plus an additional £150 per month during the winter months towards energy bills.
Two Generations co-founder Natasha Langleben said: ‘We are really proud to play a part in the resettlement process for Ukrainian refugees. We have assessed hundreds of host families for Harrow and other councils and continue to support these matches in the longer term.”
Councillor Jean Lammiman, Conservative MP, Pinner South said: “We need local people to step-forward and sign-up as hosts, so that our guests from Ukraine have the best possible chance of remaining in and around the communities that have welcomed them so warmly. We’re hopeful that a new batch of enthusiastic hosts will come forward. All you need is a desire to help and a spare room.”
