Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby: It has been a ‘tough year for Jews’

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has said it has been “a tough year for Jews” after hosting an interfaith event at Lambeth Palace.

It follows the latest annual presidents’ meeting organised by the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) and attended by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Senior Liberal Rabbi Danny Rich, Senior Masorti Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg and Senior Sephardi Rabbi Joseph Dweck.

Welby, the often forthright head of the Anglican Church, later tweeted: “This year has been very tough for the British Jewish community, so it was especially good to host the annual @CCJUK presidents’ meeting and renew our commitment to mutual understanding and friendship.”

Participants at the meeting heard how alumni from CCJ’s Yad Vashem tour had returned to share their learning at schools, churches and chaplaincies. They were also introduced to learning resources for Holocaust Memorial Day 2019, to help Christians observe acts of commemoration.
