Iran’s president threatens to ‘take the next step’ in uranium enrichment

Hassan Rouhani says his country may ratchet up tension as European leaders try to salvage nuclear agreement agreed in 2015

Iran’s president has warned Europe that Tehran will “take the next step” in increasing its uranium enrichment on Sunday.

The comments from Hassan Rouhani further increase pressure on European partners to salvage the unravelling 2015 nuclear deal after the US withdrawal from the accord last year.

Mr Rouhani said: “If you want to express regret and issue a statement, you can do it now.”

President Donald Trump pulled America out of the nuclear deal last year and restored crippling economic sanctions.

Tehran this week breached a low-enriched uranium stockpile limitation set by the deal and said that by Sunday it will increase its enrichment of uranium closer to weapons-grade levels if Europe does not offer a new deal.
