Israeli medalist auctioning Olympic name patch for charity
Bronze medalist Yarden Gerbi puts Rio name patch on eBay to raise money for children's cancer ward.
Yarden Gerbi, who claimed Israel’s first medal at the Rio Olympics, has auctioned her name tag from The Games to raise money for charity.
Posting on her Facebook account to explain why she was doing so, she wrote: “Three years ago, when I won the Judo World Championship, I wanted to give back to the community, so I auctioned the special name patch I was awarded with the title of world champion.
“The winner of the name patch was Tal Keidar, and together we managed to raise 3800$, all of which was donated to the children’s oncology ward of Ichilov hospital.
“I have now decided to auction my signed Rio Olympic name patch (the auction will close on the 29th of August).
“In addition, if the winner of the back number is Israeli (the auction is open worldwide) I will gladly hand over the item personally.
“I don’t know how much money I will raise, but I know that any amount will help.
“I may fight my battles on the Judo mat, but when I visited the ward with Professor Bickles, I met amazing kids who are true warriors and heroes, doing their best to fight and keep high spirits.
“I recently found out that Liran Or, a sweet and loving girl with whom I was in contact with, had passed away. The news of her passing hit me hard and has reinforced my decision to continue to raise finds for the same department.
