Israeli teens on UJIA bar and bat mitzvah programme mark coming of age
In previous years, Israeli celebrants were joined by UK families with children from the same age group
Eighteen teenagers on the United Jewish Israel Appeal [UJIA]’s bar and bat mitzvah programme marked their coming of age amid the pandemic.
Ceremonies were held last week in Kiryat Bialik, a city north of Haifa.
The girls’ ceremony included traditional Ethiopian dancing with each child receiving a set of Shabbat candles and a Siddur. A separate event was held for boys at a local synagogue.
In previous years, Israeli celebrants were joined by UK families with children from the same age group.
UJIA CEO Mandie Winston said: “I’m so proud of our Bar and Bat Mitzvah programme participants and of the UJIA team in Israel who did their utmost to give them a celebration they will remember for the rest of their lives. It’s fantastic that British Jews are able to make a real and lasting difference to the lives of these young Israelis.”
