Israel’s president Isaac Herzog to visit Britain this weekend
His office announces details of a two-day working trip from Sunday that includes talks with Boris Johnson and community leaders
Isaac Herzog and his wife are to fly to Britain after Shabbat this weekend for a two-day official visit, his spokesperson has announced.
It will be the first trip to the UK for the Israeli president, who took office this summer.
He will hold talks with Boris Johnson and community leaders, and take part in a special event organised by the Genesis Prize to honour the late Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks.
“As Britain carves out a new, independent role for itself in the world, the State of Israel is one of its most dependable allies on the front lines of innovation and progress,” Herzog said.
“This visit is in many ways a homecoming for me, as the son of a British Army major in the Second World War and descendant of rabbis who served all across Britain.”
The president will attend an event on Sunday organised by Chelsea FC in memory of 49 Jewish Olympic athletes murdered in the Holocaust.
On Monday, he will hold talks with MPs in Westminster before attending the event in memory of Lord Sacks organised by the Genesis Prize Foundation.
He is expected to meet community leaders on Tuesday before returning to Israel.
