You’ll never schlep alone: Jewish Liverpool fans launch new supporters’ group
More than 80 Jewish Reds gather to create a safe, proud space for football and community
More than 80 Jewish supporters of Liverpool FC gathered in London this week for the official launch of the Jewish Liverpool Supporters Group (JLSG), a new initiative aimed at bringing fans together through their shared love of the club.
The launch event drew Jewish Liverpool supporters of all ages for food, a panel discussion and a live match screening, with organisers describing a powerful sense of pride, warmth and connection in the room. For many attendees, the evening offered a rare chance to come together openly as Jewish football fans at a time when community spaces have felt increasingly important.
Elisha Lobatto, founder of JLSG, said the turnout and atmosphere were deeply moving. “Walking into the room and seeing more than 80 Jewish Liverpool fans together was honestly overwhelming in the best way. The atmosphere was warm, positive and full of pride – it felt like something we’d all been waiting for,” he said.
Lobatto said the group was formed with younger supporters particularly in mind, following a difficult period for many within the Jewish community. “For a lot of young Jewish supporters, the last few months have been really challenging. Having a space to switch off, enjoy football and be openly Jewish together meant a huge amount to so many people in the room,” he said.
JLSG aims to provide Jewish Liverpool fans with regular opportunities to meet in a welcoming and secure environment, using football as a way to strengthen social bonds and share identity.
Danny Caro, JLSG co-chairman, said the club’s strong connection with Jewish supporters made the initiative both timely and necessary. “Liverpool FC has a strong identity and a huge supporter base within the Jewish community, both here and in Israel. Our goal is to give Jewish LFC supporters the opportunity to meet up in a fun and safe environment to watch matches and reminisce,” he said.
Describing the launch event, Caro said the energy in the room captured the spirit of the new group. “There was so much energy, passion and light in the room at our launch event. One supporter told me it felt ‘like a barmitzvah’, and there was a real sense of pride as people walked in,” he said.
Organisers say further events and match screenings are planned, as JLSG looks to establish itself as a lasting hub for Jewish Liverpool supporters across the UK.
